Summer is upon us, which means our stage will be dark for a few months… but, downstairs in the office, our staff is working harder than ever! In anticipation of the 2017-2018 season, webpages must be created, repairs must be made, and artists must be contracted, among many other tasks. We spoke with a few staff members to see how their routines differ during the summer months:
John Healey, Executive Theater Manager
John, who is responsible for overseeing all programming, takes advantage of the summer months by working hard to book the next season! He spends his days searching for new acts to bring the the Weinberg Center that will delight and enrich the Frederick community. Once he selects an artist or show, he contacts the artist’s agent and arranges the performance. Logistics will need to be arranged and incorporated into the contract, including hospitality, travel arrangements, and more. From here, the staff begins the process of preparing the new season!
Jef Ciber, Box Office Manager
There is a lot of monetary talk in Jef’s summer while he preps for the new season. As shows are booked, he begins to delineate price points for the tickets. He works with John and Ashley to determine how show prices should be tiered in an accessible manner, which can include free or low-cost events like our Tivoli Discovery Series. Jef also has to be familiar with the artists contracts, ensuring that their complementary tickets are held and that contractual obligations like correct billing are met. Summer is the time for Jef to build all of the new events into our ticketing system, and to get ready for our season announcement and on-sale! Ashley Birdsell Lewis, Manager of Marketing
Ashley spends most of her summer crafting the brochure for upcoming 2017-2018 season. This will be the first information that the public will see about this year’s shows and will serve as the brand for the rest of the year! Her work begins in early May when she begins collecting assets (photos, videos, and bios) from artists that are scheduled to appear. From there, with the help of her co-workers and designers, she builds the brochure, spending much of the summer editing and finalizing. The smaller brochures, rack cards, and ads are created based on the first design. What you see when the season is announced on August 3rd is much of Ashley’s hard work! For more about Ashley’s busy days, check out her Day in the Life!
Rebecca O’Leary, Manager of Development
Over the summer, Rebecca sets out to work with the Weinberg’s sponsors and valued members! She communicates with the sponsors regarding the upcoming season, informing them about upcoming shows and ascertaining how they would like to continue their relationship with the Weinberg. She also reaches out to our members for their annual renewals, organizes their yearly member reception, and makes sure that everyone is ready for when tickets go on sale! Rebecca is wonderful at maintaining our relationships with the Frederick community throughout the whole year, and the summer proves no exception.
Greg Davis, Technical Manager
Greg’s summers focus heavily on the maintenance of the Weinberg; this historic building doesn’t keep itself running! In preparing for the new season, Greg and his team oversee the cleaning and maintenance of the amplifiers, the cleaning of our many lighting fixtures, and the painting of the dressing rooms. It’s important to keep everything fresh and clean for our artists and audiences. Don’t worry… he won’t paint over our famous signature wall! Greg works hard with his technical crew to ensure that the Weinberg Center is up and running at 100% come the start of our our season this fall. The facility is in good hands with Greg!
While summer may be a bit different, it’s a fun time getting ready for our upcoming season and getting our audiences excited for what’s to come. Make sure you’re following along on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for the latest news — and of course, reading our latest Weinberg Insider installments!
See you at the theater!
